Legality of Homeopathy

Homeopathic Medicine has a long history in the province of Ontario. It has been a regulated profession since 1869 to until 1969. One of the reasons for its decline may have been the lack of a well-founded teaching institution, not to mention other factors contributing to homeopathy's decline internationally. After 1969, homeopathy was not represented in the CPSO and it was not until the 1980's that homeopathy returned, strongly supported by the general demand for complementary approaches in health care. In 1995, the homeopathic Community in Ontario have requested the then Minister of Health and long term care, Hon. George Smitherman to regulate homeopathy und Regulated Health Professions Act 1991. After the advise of the Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council who have done public and stake holders consultations of which HMECC Inc. & Homeopathic Medical Association were the active participants, the Minister had introduced the Bill C-171 which added five new professions to be regulated under The Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA). There are now 28 health care professions including medical doctors, dentists, nurses, chiropractors, naturopaths and homeopaths. The bill was passed into Law in Ontario with effect from Monday the June 4, 2007 as Homeopathic Act 2007. A transitional Committee of the College of Homeopaths was appointed by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to allow self-regulation of the homeopathy profession within the framework of the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA) and the Homeopathy Act, 2007. It has a specific duty to protect the public interest and manage all affairs of the transitional Council of the College of Homeopaths of Ontario (TC-CHO). It is expected that the Transitional Council will submit its report to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care by Dec 2012 for proclamation of the Homeopathic Act 2007.
